| ADP Screening
& Selection Services reported recently that
its 2001 pre-employment screenings turned up the
following in some 2.6 million checks:
- 41% had one or more moving
violations, a DUI, or a suspended license
- 33% had credit problems;
- 41% misrepresented employment or educational
background; and
- 5% had a criminal conviction in the past seven
years.
Could your firm afford to hire employees such
as these? In your particular industry and given
the current economic conditions and often cited
lack of well-trained personnel available to fill
openings, could you afford not to? As an employer,
it’s your decision how deeply you will research
applicant backgrounds and how what you find will
affect your ultimate hiring decision. But did
you know your decision also could directly impact
your insurance coverages? For example, employees
with moving violations (particularly a major one
such as a DUI) are a critical concern of the insurance
carrier when underwriting automobile coverages.
Criminal convictions have an equally chilling
effect upon crime and employee dishonesty coverages.
When reviewing your screening and hiring policies,
talk with our professionals about such underwriting
concerns and how various factors will impact your
rates and/or access to the coverages your business
needs. Then you can make your hiring decisions
with the confidence that all the considerations
are on the table. |
